    Four Men Charged in Armed Robbery of U.S. Postal Service Employee

    NEWARK, N.J. – Four Essex County men have been charged in connection with the armed robbery of a U.S. Postal Service employee, U.S. Attorney Philip R. Sellinger announced today.

    Troy D. Corbett Jr., 28, Dyshawn Williams, 28, and Antwuan Brown, 24, all from Newark, face charges of conspiracy to commit Hobbs Act robbery. Corbett and Williams are also charged with assaulting or impeding a federal officer using a deadly weapon. Additionally, Brown and Karieem Stamps, 25, also from Newark, face charges of wire fraud and aggravated identity theft. Corbett faces further charges of possession of ammunition by a convicted felon, possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine, and possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime. Stamps is also charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

    The arrests took place on August 1, 2024. Corbett, Williams, and Stamps were apprehended in Newark and appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Leda Dunn Wettre in Newark federal court, where they were detained. Brown was arrested in Mecklenburg, North Carolina, and made his initial appearance before U.S. Magistrate Judge David Keesler in North Carolina federal court, where he was also detained.

    Incident Details

    According to court documents, in November 2023, Corbett and Williams, along with another individual, robbed a U.S. Postal Service employee at gunpoint in Newark. The robbers stole the victim’s cell phone, keys, wallet, credit card, and debit card, impeding the victim's ability to deliver mail and interfering with interstate commerce. Shortly after the robbery, Stamps and Brown used the stolen debit card to make purchases that were processed through servers located outside of New Jersey.

    On January 18, 2024, Corbett, who has prior felony convictions from 2018, was found in possession of a large quantity of methamphetamine and a pistol loaded with 16 rounds of ammunition. On August 1, 2024, Stamps, who has a felony conviction from 2020, was found with a Glock 29 Gen5 handgun equipped with an extended magazine and approximately 25 rounds of 9mm ammunition.

    Potential Penalties

    • Conspiracy to Commit Hobbs Act Robbery and Assaulting or Impeding a Federal Employee: Up to 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
    • Wire Fraud: Up to 30 years in prison and a $1 million fine.
    • Aggravated Identity Theft: Mandatory two-year prison sentence.
    • Possession of Ammunition or a Firearm by a Convicted Felon: Up to 15 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
    • Possession with Intent to Distribute Methamphetamine: Up to 20 years in prison and a $1 million fine.
    • Possession of a Firearm in Furtherance of a Drug Trafficking Crime: Mandatory five-year prison sentence, with a maximum potential penalty of life in prison.

    Investigation and Prosecution

    U.S. Attorney Sellinger credited the investigation to postal inspectors from the U.S. Postal Inspection Service in Newark, led by Christopher A. Nielsen of the Philadelphia Division. Additional assistance was provided by the FBI, the U.S. Marshals Service, the Newark Police Department, the New Jersey State Parole Board, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) Newark Division.

    The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Eli Jacobs of the General Crimes Unit in Newark.

    The charges and allegations in the complaint are accusations, and the defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
