The U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of New York announced that Darrell Thomas, a Brooklyn resident, was sentenced to 87 months in federal prison for his involvement in an armed robbery at a church in Queens, New York. The incident occurred in December 2021, when Thomas, already on federal supervised release for a prior robbery conviction, entered the church and brandished a firearm at staff members, demanding money. He fled the scene with stolen cash but was later apprehended.

U.S. Attorney Breon Peace emphasized that this sentence serves as a stern reminder that those who commit violent crimes, particularly in sacred spaces, will be held accountable. The prosecution underscored the ongoing commitment of law enforcement to protect communities and uphold the sanctity of places of worship.

Thomas's sentencing also included a period of supervised release following his prison term, during which he will be closely monitored to prevent further criminal behavior. This case is part of a broader effort by federal authorities to address gun violence and ensure the safety of all communities, particularly those most vulnerable to such attacks.
