GREENSBORO, N.C. – A federal grand jury in Greensboro has indicted Jerome Osuamadi Nwabueze, a former resident of Raleigh, North Carolina, on 27 counts related to preparing and filing false tax returns and obstructing the IRS.

According to the indictment, Nwabueze owned and operated Total Tax Services, a tax preparation business located in High Point, North Carolina. Between 2018 and 2022, Nwabueze allegedly engaged in fraudulent activities by preparing and submitting false tax returns on behalf of his clients. These returns reportedly included fabricated or inflated figures for wages, withholdings, business income and expenses, and education expenses, all aimed at securing higher refunds for his clients.

In addition to falsifying client returns, Nwabueze is also accused of preparing and filing false tax returns for himself, reporting similar fictitious items and failing to disclose income he earned from his tax preparation services. These actions allegedly resulted in refunds for Nwabueze to which he was not legally entitled.

The indictment further claims that when the IRS audited Nwabueze in 2020, he attempted to obstruct the investigation by fabricating tax documents and submitting them to the IRS.

If convicted, Nwabueze faces a maximum penalty of three years in prison for each count of filing a false tax return, as well as an additional three years for the obstruction charge. A federal district court judge will determine the final sentence, taking into account the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors.

This case underscores the serious consequences of tax fraud and obstruction of justice, as federal authorities continue to pursue those who seek to defraud the government and manipulate the tax system for personal gain.
