The Tempe Park Ranger team recently rescued a duckling that had a fishing lure stuck in its beak at Kiwanis Lake after Tempe Fire Medical Rescue dispatched the rangers.

A city release explained that the rangers were able to catch the bird and transport it to Fallen Feathers rescue in Peoria. The rangers spent two hours trying to rescue the duckling, using nets and kayaks, and finally jumping into the water to bring the duck to safety.

The bird rescue was able to operate and remove the lure. The duckling is healing well from its sutures and will be released back into the wild soon, according to the release.

Tempe's Park Ranger program was launched in November throughout the city's parks and preserves. The release added that Park Ranger Jackson Darr will host a community hike on Sunday, June 9 at 7 a.m.

Hikers will enjoy a roughly 2-mile easy scenic hike through Papago Preserve and Evelyn Hallman Park. Plus, learn about plants and animals seen along the way.

Meet at the Papago North ballfield parking lot, south of Arizona Heritage Center. Bring plenty of water and hiking shoes. Registration required .
