It all seems so obvious right now.
Look at the college football schedules, look at how good the teams should be, and then look at where the disparities in the win totals are.
But, of course, that’s not always how it works when it comes to figuring out whether or not to go over or under on a college football team’s total.
What if the star quarterback gets hurt? What if the unknown quarterback turns into a superstar?
Injuries, upstart freshmen, bad weather, a flare up of COVID or the stomach flu, or late season bouts of want-to-be-in-NFLitis among the stars - there are a gazillion different things that can go right or wrong.
So with all of that, out of all the win totals for all 134 college football teams going into the 2024 season, which ten appear to be the best bets? We take the consensus win total combination of BetMGM, Caesars, FanDuel, and CFN - what we'd set the line at - along with our preseason prediction and win total pick.
Remembering that this JUST for the regular season - the conference championships, bowls, and College Football Playoff games aren’t factored into the total - the ten best college football win total predictions for 2024 are …
Nov 11, 2023; Fayetteville, Arkansas, USA; Arkansas Razorbacks cheerleaders before the game against the Auburn Tigers at Donald W. Reynolds Razorback Stadium. Auburn won 48-10.
Consensus Win Total: 9.125 CFN Regular Season Prediction: 9-3 Win Total Prediction: Under
This is strictly a strength-in-numbers schedule play, because this Tennessee team is terrific. There will be two likely losses somewhere - which still gets the Vols into the expanded College Football Playoff, by the way - but the concern is that third.
Assuming the trip to Georgia is a loss,. You need two more out of this bunch - NC State (in Charlotte), at Oklahoma, at Arkansas, Florida, Alabama, Kentucky - to get the under. And then … Tennessee Preview | Schedule
9. Arkansas
Consensus Win Total: 4.875 CFN Regular Season Prediction: 5-7 Win Total Prediction: Over
This is a strength-in-numbers thing on the winning side.
Arkansas should be stronger after a dud of a 4-8 season. Last year’s team struggled, and it still pushed Alabama and LSU on the road. Five of the eight losses were by a touchdown or less.
Arkansas-Pine Bluff, UAB, Louisiana Tech. Barring a total meltdown, you’re at three wins. And now here’s the problem. Find the home win against Tennessee, LSU, Ole Miss, and Texas.
There has to be one, and there needs to be one upset win away from him against Texas A&M - that’s played in Arlington - Oklahoma State, Auburn, Mississippi State, and Missouri.
Consensus Win Total: 6.875 CFN Regular Season Prediction: 8-4 Win Total Prediction: Over
There might be a slew of massive changes happening at Washington - new conference, new coaching staff, new skill stars - but there’s still plenty of good parts around from the team that went to the national championship.
No, this shouldn't be 2022 to 2023 TCU.
The 6.5 win total at most of the betting houses feels way light with Weber State, Eastern Michigan, Washington State, Northwestern, at Rutgers, at Indiana, and UCLA all likely wins.
But even with five or six out of that group, the Huskies should be strong enough to pull off something else fun with USC coming to Seattle and a trip to Iowa a 50/50. Washington Preview | Schedule
7. UConn
Consensus Win Total: 4.75 CFN Regular Season Prediction: 6-6 Win Total Prediction: Over
Are the Huskies six-win good like they were under Jim Mora in 2022, or 3-9 blah like last year? There’s an improvement overall, and the offense should do a whole lot more. Getting to five wins with this year’s team isn’t asking for the world.
