Watch Tyler Childers Deal with Audience Members Demanding He Play “Feathered Indians”

“Feathered Indians” is one of Tyler Childers’ best-known songs. It was a standout track on his 2017 breakthrough album Purgatory. The song is certified Double Platinum by the RIAA and sits at more than 475 million streams on Spotify alone. It is, without a doubt, one of the Kentucky troubadour’s signature songs, for better or worse.

For a few years, “Feathered Indians” was a mainstay in Childers’ setlists. After all, fans love it and it’s a high-energy track that translates well to a live arrangement. However, just like any other worker can get tired of repeating a task day in and day out, Childers got tired of playing the song. As a result, it dropped out of his setlist for a while. Many concertgoers were unhappy about that, to say the least.

In the video above, taken from a London stop on his Mule Pull tour from earlier this year, Childers has a few words for those demanding he play “Feathered Indians.” The clip doesn’t show the beginning of the interaction. However, it does capture a garbled outburst from a fan. Childers chuckles to himself, takes a sip from his drink, and says, “Somebody told me that’s poor showmanship. At least I’m being honest. So, thank you.” Then, the band plays “Angel Band.”

Tyler Childers Continues to Leave “Feathered Indians” Out of His Setlist

For a while, Tyler Childers refused to play “Feathered Indians” and other songs including “Lady May” and “Whitehouse Road” during his shows. Instead, he focused on newer material and deep cuts that longtime hardcore fans would enjoy. However, he has worked a few of those songs back into his setlists.

For instance, when Childers brought his Mule Pull Tour to Knoxville, Tennessee earlier this year, he played many of his most popular songs. “All Your’n,” “Lady May,” “Shake the Frost,” and “Whitehouse Road” made the list alongside cuts from Can I Take My Hounds to Heaven and Rustin’ in the Rain. However, he still refused to play “Feathered Indians.”
