The last board meeting of the summer for Southwestern Schools was brief, yet productive. It started with Superintendent Chris Stitzle leading a second reading of the new technology policy updates. These updates don’t allow cell phones to be out during instructional time.

In new business, a teacher appreciation grant, that has been awarded to each school the past several years, was again approved. It gives teachers a bonus based on their effectiveness rating through the school year.

“When we receive that money, we divide it up amongst our teachers. The ones that get a highly effective rating get 25% more than the ones that get an effective rating. If you don’t receive a highly effective or effective rating, you are not eligible to receive any kind of bonus.”

The board finalized food prices and bus financing as well, allowing them to turn their full attention to the first day of classes. They say the biggest concern is making sure they have enough teachers and that their skills are used effectively.

The school year begins on August 7th for Southwest Corporation students.
