TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) – A local hospital is now the first in the state of Indiana to have the Da Vinci 5 surgical robot.

It was recently installed at Union Health in Terre Haute. In fact, Union Health is getting one of the only 400 to be distributed worldwide. Union Health has had a surgical robot for about ten years. However, the installation of the Da Vinci 5 means they now have two platforms, allowing them to do more cases.

The surgical robots are used in minimally invasive surgeries. The surgeon controls the robot 100% of the time. It allows the surgeon to do intricate, delicate surgeries through small incisions.

“The plan is that hopefully it’s going to equal out to more gentle surgery, and as we know more gentle suregry is hopefully going to equal out to better outcomes, quicker recovery for the patient, and that’s the biggest thing with this system,” said Dr. Mohammed Zaher, Urologist.

Union Health expects to start using the new surgical robot next week.
