According to a recent study, the cost of climate disasters in Texas from 2000 to last year was $97 billion, the total cost of the 500 most expensive disasters in the state. The Texas wildfires occurred after the study was done. Losses from that event alone were estimated at just shy of $1 billion.

NOAA put the total cost of climate crises in Texas last year at $10 billion to $20 billion for 2023, so the Texas figure has probably already moved above the $100 billion threshold.

The analysis from Rainbow Restoration puts Louisana at $94 billion based on the same dates and metrics, even though it is a fraction of the size of Texas based on square miles. However, it has been the site of the landfall of several hurricanes, including Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

    Four Troubled States

Florida ranks third but is well below the others in dollar amount at $61 billion. Mississippi is fourth at $29 billion.

It should not come as no surprise that the Gulf Coast, the location of so many huge and catastrophic hurricanes, borders the four states on this list.
