Just when you thought the heat was bad enough, this summer has seen a rise in scorpion sightings .

Scorpions are invading homes in Central Texas in higher numbers than past summers, according to KXAN Austin . The pest control team at ABC Homes and Commercial Services have reported a rise in calls for scorpion removals.

The reason stems from the heat, said Alan Brown, a board certified entomologist with ABC.

He told KXAN: “What’s happening now is it’s getting so hot outside, getting dry, they’re seeking a cooler place to go.”

But it’s not just the heat. With the plentiful rain showers this past spring, flooding has brought them out of their burrows and to the surface, explained Dave Moellendorf with Zookeeper Exotic Pets.

Scorpions can normally be found under rocks, trying to stay cool. When constantly seeking shade, they may mistake your home for a cool rock.

They’re also drawn to damp areas, meaning you could find them in your pool, toilet or showers. While they aren’t adept swimmers, they are able to float on the water, according to Arizona Central .

To keep them out, be sure to seal any cracks around your home. Brown explained that common pesticides often don’t work on arachnids like scorpions, so you’ll want to seek out a special scorpion treatment to spray around your property.

Another place scorpions hang out is trees, so trimming branches near your windows or roof can also prevent them from getting in.

If you’re wanting to stay on the lookout for scorpions, buy a black light. The arachnids glow in the dark when exposed to a black light, making them easier to see.
