Hurricane Beryl has already killed at least six people while it it battered the Caribbean as a category four storm.

And it’s headed for Texas, where it’s expected to slam the Gulf Coast as a tropical storm towards the end of the weekend or early Monday, according to meteorologists.

Outer rain bands of Beryl are estimated to blow through the Texas coast early Monday, as per National Weather Service projections on Wednesday.

However, it is not clear exactly how powerful the Beryl will remain after hitting the Yucatan Peninsula, which could weaken the storm from its major hurricane status.

“The main key is we are still several days away and there’s still some uncertainty with the forecast, but the cone does include Southern Texas at this time” said Fox Weather Meteorologist Samantha Thomas.

Thomas cautioned that even if Hurricane Beryl changes course, wind, rain, and rip currents are likely to hit the Gulf Coast of Texas.

“Anyone in or traveling to southern Texas should keep this in mind over the weekend and make preparations, especially those along the coast,” Thomas said.

Major Hurricane Beryl hit Jamaica on Wednesday, with islanders scrambling to prepare for potential devastation after the storm killed at least six people and caused significant damage in the southeast Caribbean.

The storm was expected to remain at major-hurricane strength as it passes near Jamaica on Wednesday, near the Cayman Islands on Thursday and into Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula on Friday, according to the U.S. National Hurricane Center.

Texans should keep an eye on the forecast through the weekend for any developments and changes to Major Hurricane Beryl’s projected path, according to Thomas.
