WAURIKA, Okla. ( KFDX/KJTL ) — An Oklahoma festival about rattlesnakes? Yes, you heard that right.

The venomous snake, synonymous with the American West, took center stage for the annual Waurika Rattlesnake Hunt.

Just north of the Red River is a rattlesnake hunt for the whole family. Every year, the second weekend in April marks the beginning of the Waurika Rattlesnake Hunt, one of the town’s largest attractions.

It’s not all about the snakes, either. The event’s proceeds go to the Waurika Volunteer Fire Department.

“Yeah, this is our fundraiser for the year,” said Lodge Scott, a member of the WVFD. “It’s the one and only fundraiser we really do, and it helps fund our fuel and equipment costs throughout the year.”

With all of the activity that the rattlesnake hunt brings to Waurika every year, it’s no wonder that it has a major impact on the community. Unfortunately, we don’t quite know why rattlesnakes are center stage for the festival.

“I’m not really sure about the rattlesnakes, but they bring people down and make them spend their money here,” Scott explained. “It boosts our economy and helps everyone out here in town.”

Of course, with all of the fair attractions in Waurika for the rattlesnake hunt, it becomes a fantastic family attraction. Three of the kids at the fair told KFDX reporter Aaron Gonders their favorite part about the rattlesnake hunt.

“Getting to just explore and see what it all has to offer, all the animals, and see all their rides and everything,” said Matthew Hopson.

“It’s probably the rides and just getting to spend time with your family and all that stuff,” said Kingston Myers. “Just having fun.” Kingston’s younger sister, Lincoln, chimed in, “My favorite thing is to ride rides with my brother.”

The Waurika Rattlesnake Hunt is fun for the whole family, with everything from competitions to food, fun, and games.
