Waco, TX ( FOX 44 ) — Every morning, Yesenia Hernandez wakes up before sunrise to ensure that the children get to school safely.

Hernandez is greeted every morning by children and parents walking to school, giving her the opportunity to make connections with the students.

“I really like this job because I get to interact with a lot of kids and, you know, meet new people,” says head custodian Yesenia Hernandez.

Since she’s been doing this every school year for the past 7years, she gets to know all the students.

“I recognize a lot of their faces, and I also remember their names,” says Hernandez.

It’s not just escorting kids to safety, when Hernandez is not attending to kids, she is training first time crossing guards.

“You got to show them that you got to be careful. You got to look out for cars, you got to pay attention. You got to look out for the kids,” says Hernandez.

Not only is she impacting kids’ lives but also her trainees.

“The first time I walked in, she gave very simple instructions. Nothing too complicated, nothing all over the place. She’s very good at what she does, helping people and getting people to understand what they need to do,” says trainee custodian Keyona Adams.

Even on hard days when the weather is bad, she is out making sure every kid is safe on their way to school.

“We still come out here. We’re out here with our rain jackets and rain boots. We’re out here. It doesn’t matter if it’s snowing. We’re out here,” says Hernandez.

Hernandez hopes to impact the kids in a positive way when they start off each day at school!
