Lightning strike causes hay fire at Shumway Farms
A haystack caught fire early Monday morning at Shumway Farms in Osmond. Afton Fire Chief Cody Wilkes said the department was dispatched to the scene at roughly 3:50 a.m. According to Wilkes, lightning struck in the middle of a stack of large round bails, igniting a fire that began to spread in all directions. Firefighters immediately began to spray the fire while working to move hay that had not yet caught fire. Nearby neighbors also pitched in with their own equipment to help move hay from the flames. Montana Ranchers Burned Out: Where’s the Big Talk Now?
Where are our guys? Has anyone heard from Tester or Raines yet on help for the ranchers who have been burned out by the fires? There are 56 huge fires now burning in Montana, Idaho, and Wyoming. Most of ours are related to the fierce lightning that moved through last Wednesday. I saw some of the most gut-wrenching photos this morning of a family's cows that couldn't get out of the way in time. It broke my heart to see this cruelty that Mother Nature delivered to them. I love all my animals, much like most ranchers, and I don't know if I could handle it either. Cows and their calves lying there next to each other where they died an awful death. I wish there was more we could do.
