CHICAGO (AP) — The dead woman who was found entangled in a baggage conveyor belt at Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport was from North Carolina, authorities said Friday. The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the woman as 57-year-old Virginia Christine Vinton of Waxhaw, North Carolina. The office’s spokesperson, Natalia Derevyanny, said an autopsy was scheduled for Friday.  Firefighters responding to a 911 call found Vinton’s body entangled in the belt around 7:45 a.m. Thursday in a baggage room near a terminal that serves international flights.  According to police, surveillance footage shows Vinton enter the area around 2:27 a.m. Thursday, but it doesn’t show what happened to her.

SAO PAULO (AP) — A plane with 62 people aboard crashed in a fiery wreck in a residential area of a city in Brazil’s Sao Paulo state Friday, the airline said, but it was not immediately clear how many people were injured or killed. The airline VOEPASS confirmed in a statement that a plane headed for Sao Paulo’s international airport Guarulhos crashed in the city of Vinhedo with 58 passengers and 4 crew members aboard. The statement didn’t say what caused the accident. At an event in southern Brazil, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva asked the crowd to stand and observe a minute of silence as he shared the news. He said that it appeared that all passengers and crew aboard had died, without elaborating as to how that information had been obtained.  Video the AP obtained from a bystander and verified shows at least two bodies strewn about flaming pieces of wreckage.

RENO, Nevada (AP) — A Nevada man charged with a hate crime acknowledged he referenced a “hanging tree” during a verbal altercation with a Black man who was gathering signatures for a proposed ballot measure southeast of Reno, according to a criminal complaint made public Thursday. Gary Miller, 74, his wife and their adult daughter were arrested Wednesday on various misdemeanors. They posted bail hours later and were released from the Storey County jail, court documents show. The encounter that the Black man, Ricky Johnson, started recording after the “hanging tree” comment became heated, with both sides yelling profanities during a classic car show in in Virginia City, an Old West tourist destination. As the video starts, Johnson demands that Miller repeat what he said off camera. Miller didn’t but later told a sheriff’s investigator that he told Miller earlier that “there was a hanging tree down the road to go hang out there,” according to an affidavit attached to the criminal complaint. At one point in the video, Johnson asks Miller the location of that tree and Miller replies “in your backyard.”
