Monte Sano Elementary's Wednesday classes had to make some sharp shifts after a reported bedbug exposure.

According to a letter sent to Monte Sano families from Principal Jasmine Scott, a kindergarten student was exposed to bedbugs outside the school and administration activated its bedbug protocol.

All kindergarten classes were removed from their normal classrooms for the day and instruction took place in other part of the school. All students and classroom items were examined. To ensure no bedbugs enter families' homes, kindergarteners' belongings are being kept overnight to be treated. Parents and guardians are being given additional resources and information.

Classes are set to resume as normal on Thursday. No other grade levels were believed to be in danger.

"We appreciate your patience and understanding as we work to ensure that our classrooms are safe environments for learning," Scott wrote. "If you or your child(ren) have any concerns about their health, please contact our front office."

Bed bugs are small, flat insects that bite people and animals at night while they sleep, feeding on their blood. According to the CDC , they can live several months without food. While they are not known to spread diseases, it can become difficult and expensive to get rid of them if not handled carefully.

Richmond County School System's spokesperson Haley Lacuesta said via email that they are aware of the situation at Monte Sano and the school is addressing the concerns. More information will be available on their public records portal by the end of the business day.

This is a breaking news story. Stay tuned for further updates.
