A commercial broadcast TV network is changing Augusta affiliates.

Nexstar Media Group, the company that owns station WJBF-TV, announced Aug. 22 that Augusta's Channel 6 will join four other Nexstar stations in supporting the Nexstar-owned CW Network on their digital subchannels.

When U.S. terrestrial TV broadasting switched from analog to all-digital in 2009, many stations began supporting digital multicasting, which allows other channels that can be received by TVs with analog antennas.

Television stations are allowed specific bandwidths as regulated by the Federal Communications Commission. Other TV channels can be broadcast within that bandwidth. For example, WJBF also supports classic-TV network MeTV on its D2 subchannel.

Starting in September and October, The CW will replace one of three digital multicast networks owned by the E.W. Scripps Co. – Ion, Bounce or Laff. Scripps announced earlier this year that it's dropping CW affiliates in several markets.

Previously, the Augusta area's CW access was supported by one of the digital multicasting channels belonging to NBC affiliate WAGT-TV.

The other stations becoming new CW affiliates are KFDX, Wichita Falls, Tex.; WTWO, Terre Haute, Ind.; KARD, Monroe, La.; and WFXV, Utica, N.Y.
