Lovely weather made it a perfect Sunday afternoon on August 4 for the annual “Sundae in the Park” celebration held in Sellwood Park, on the bluff overlooking Oaks Bottom, Oaks Park, and the Willamette River.

Indeed, real ice cream sundaes were back, scooped up by Sellwood Community House adult and teen volunteers – complete with toppings.

“This is the 44th annual ‘Sundae in the Park’ – an annual tradition that SMILE is bringing back to our neighbors,” pointed out the Sellwood Moreland Improvement League (SMILE) neighborhood association’s President, David Dugan.

“We’re having an amazing turnout here today; it’s great to see a really large crowd,” Dugan observed. “In addition to the sundaes and the live music, we have many exhibitors here – local businesses and organizations – as well as our SMILE History Committee.”

Five musical groups entertained throughout the afternoon. Between sets, in the mid-afternoon, Classical Ballet Academy students performed. Then, with the help of the students and teachers, School Director Sarah Rigles led the crowd in a “dance class” that got them all – from the very young, to the seniors – up and dancing.

“One of SMILE’s main missions is to ‘build community’ in a way that helps us all feel like we’re a cohesive neighborhood,” explained Dugan. “Seeing all the smiles here, and all the families having a good time, this year’s ‘Sundae in the Park’ has certainly been successful in meeting that goal.”

If you missed it, Sundae in the Park returns to Sellwood Park on Sunday, August 3rd, next year.
