NEW CARLISLE, Ind. – The small town of New Carlisle is preparing for significant changes as major investments loom on the horizon. This summer, ABC57 is exploring Michiana's developing downtowns, beginning with New Carlisle, where growth is stirring mixed emotions among residents.

"New Carlisle evolves slowly, and that's part of its charm," says Marcy Kauffman, New Carlisle Town Council President. Having grown up in the town, Kauffman has a deep connection to the area and a clear vision for its future. Looking down Michigan Street, she sees empty buildings and current town staples, envisioning a vibrant, evolving downtown.

The catalyst for this transformation is the announcement of an $11 billion Amazon Data Center and a $3 billion General Motors electric vehicle battery plant. These projects are set to bring thousands of jobs to the outskirts of town, marking the largest investment Indiana has ever seen.

"It's a little bit scary," Kauffman admits, acknowledging the scale of the upcoming changes. Local business owner Margaret Czarnecki, who runs Carlisle Coffee and Sweets and Moser's Austrian Cafe, is already feeling the impact. "With the businesses coming in, I've had customers asking for a dozen muffins, and we usually sell just a few a day," she shares.

While some residents are enthusiastic about the growth, others are cautious. Concerns about maintaining the town's quaint charm and avoiding urban sprawl have been voiced at county council meetings. "I'm all about progress as long as it's positive," one resident stated.

Kauffman emphasizes the town's efforts to manage growth responsibly. Plans include more housing, commercial spaces, and ensuring walkability and safety for residents. "We're working hard to make growth measured and sustainable," she assures.

As the town slogan goes, "New Carlisle is a nice place to visit, a great place to live." Kauffman welcomes future residents, hoping they find the same sense of community that current residents cherish.
