SOUTH BEND, Ind. — The South Bend Common Council has once again postponed the final vote on the controversial tax abatement extension for property developer Dave Matthews.

During Monday’s meeting, the council was set to deliberate on the extension for the property at 300 E. Lasalle Avenue. However, 4th District Council Member Troy Warner announced that the discussion would be delayed. The postponement comes at the request of Matthews and his bank, who have asked for additional time to resolve outstanding tax payments and address other issues related to the project.

Warner emphasized the council’s commitment to ensuring that developers meet their financial obligations and adhere to ethical standards. “We want to ensure that taxes are paid, commitments are fulfilled, and all code and ethics issues are resolved,” Warner stated. “If there is an opportunity to address these concerns, we are willing to provide the necessary time.”

The issue is expected to return to the council’s agenda on August 26, allowing further time for negotiations and resolution.
