Michiana — The relentless march of severe weather has made its mark on Michiana this year, with tornadoes striking at an alarming rate. While Thursday's showers provided a temporary break from the storms, the region remains on high alert as meteorologists predict more severe weather on the horizon.

Just last Tuesday, an EF-2 tornado tore through near Three Rivers, Michigan, underscoring the intensity of this year's tornado season. In Michigan alone, there have been 20 reported tornadoes in 2024, significantly surpassing the annual average of 13. Of those, at least seven tornadoes have touched down in Michiana counties in southwest Michigan, a clear sign that the region is bearing the brunt of this unusually turbulent year.

Indiana, too, is experiencing a dramatic increase in tornado activity, with over 50 reports this year—more than double the state's average. Four of these tornadoes have been reported in Michiana counties, further emphasizing the region's vulnerability during this active weather season.

As the season progresses, the threat is far from over. The forecast suggests the potential for more severe storms on Friday, with strong systems expected both in the morning and later in the evening. Residents are urged to stay vigilant and keep an eye on updates from the First Warning Neighborhood Weather Team to stay informed and prepared.
