BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — In a remarkable display of bravery and quick thinking, Jefferson County Sheriff's Deputy Sgt. Jeremy Barbin is set to receive a Lifesaving Medal for his extraordinary actions in saving a newborn’s life during a critical delivery.

The incident unfolded when Barbin was flagged down by a frantic man whose pregnant girlfriend had unexpectedly gone into labor at a nearby home. According to footage from Barbin’s body camera, he responded swiftly, putting on gloves and rushing to the scene as the urgency of the situation became apparent.

Upon arrival, Barbin found the woman on the ground in distress, her cries for help echoing through the room as the newborn’s umbilical cord was wrapped around its neck. “As I opened the door, I see a young lady laying on the ground and another middle-aged lady, saying 'help me, help me.' And she's obviously having a baby,” Barbin recounted.

The deputy and his team took immediate action, carefully unwrapping the umbilical cord from the baby’s neck and ensuring both mother and child received prompt medical attention. The baby and mother were then evaluated by paramedics and transported to a hospital for further care.

In a statement shared by the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office, Barbin reflected on the experience: “I believe God puts us in certain places to help, and it's just right place, right time.”

Sgt. Jeremy Barbin will be honored with the Lifesaving Medal at the police department's academy graduation ceremony on Friday, a testament to his dedication and heroism in the line of duty.
