ELKHART, Ind. — On Friday, police departments across Indiana, including Elkhart, teamed up with Dunkin' Donuts for the annual "Cop on a Rooftop" event, raising funds for the Special Olympics of Indiana.

Starting at 5 a.m., Elkhart Police officers were stationed at the Dunkin' Donuts on County Road 6, where they collected donations from the community. For each donation, contributors received a coupon for a free donut, and those who donated over $10 were also rewarded with a free medium coffee until noon.

"Last year, Special Olympics and police were able to raise over $2,000," said Jessica McBrier, Elkhart Police Public Information Officer. This year, the department hopes to exceed that amount.

Officers took shifts throughout the morning, and they accepted donations via buckets and Venmo codes. The results of the fundraising effort will be shared on the Elkhart Police Department’s Facebook page next week.

This event is part of a broader initiative to support the Special Olympics of Indiana, which provides year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities.
