As summer draws to a close, students in South Bend are returning to classrooms under the weight of significant changes that mark the beginning of the new school year. Today is especially momentous for the two largest districts in the area, Elkhart and South Bend, as they welcome students back after a season of substantial shifts in leadership, infrastructure, and policy.

This school year begins without the familiar presence of Clay High School and Warren Elementary, which did not reopen their doors. Additionally, South Bend Schools has regained control of four schools previously managed by the Empowerment Zone, including Navarre Middle School. This strategic move, announced in July, aims to bring these schools back under the direct leadership of the South Bend School Corporation, a decision that Superintendent Todd Cummings believes is crucial for the district’s future.

In an exclusive one-on-one interview, Superintendent Cummings discussed the district's challenges and the path forward. He acknowledged the community's concerns, particularly about the ongoing issues with bus routes. For two years, parents have voiced frustration over buses arriving late or not showing up at all, a problem that has only added stress as students prepare to return to school. Cummings assured that finalizing bus routes is a priority, and steps are being taken to improve the situation.

Despite these logistical challenges, there is optimism surrounding the district's academic goals. South Bend Schools are doubling down on efforts to enhance math and literacy scores, recognizing these as critical areas for student success. A key component of this initiative is the professional development of teachers, particularly those with associate degrees, to ensure classrooms are fully staffed and equipped to meet students' needs.

On a positive note, recent data shows an increase in reading proficiency among third graders, as highlighted in the latest IREAD report. Superintendent Cummings sees this as a sign that the district's focus on literacy is beginning to yield results, but he remains committed to pushing those numbers even higher.

In a significant move to support students and families, the South Bend School Corporation announced on Thursday that all students, regardless of income, will receive free breakfast and lunch. This initiative is set to alleviate some of the financial burdens on families and ensure that every child has access to nutritious meals throughout the school day.

As the school year begins, South Bend Schools are navigating a landscape of change with a renewed focus on academic excellence and community support. Superintendent Cummings is hopeful that these efforts will pave the way for a successful year ahead.
