The comprehensive analysis by Bankrate delves into four major areas of car ownership: insurance, fuel, maintenance, and taxes. The findings highlight how these "hidden" costs vary significantly from state to state, shedding light on the financial landscape for car owners.

In Georgia, drivers face the steepest costs, averaging $8,249 annually for car-related expenses. Conversely, New Hampshire offers a more affordable scenario, with average yearly expenses amounting to $4,299. The national average stands at $6,684, which encompasses the cost of full coverage insurance, vehicle taxes, fuel, and maintenance.

Insurance, the most significant expense in the car ownership equation, has seen a dramatic 20% increase since June 2022. The average annual cost for full coverage car insurance now sits at $2,329. States like New York, Louisiana, Florida, Colorado, and Nevada bear the highest insurance premiums.

Vehicle taxes contribute an additional $1,182 to the annual cost of car ownership nationwide, with California leading the pack at $1,841. Georgia, Indiana, Rhode Island, and Tennessee follow closely behind.

Fuel prices also play a critical role, with Hawaii and California recording the highest gas prices in the country at $4.69 and $4.66 per gallon, respectively.
