South Bend, Ind. — With travel plans on the rise this year, many pet owners are making arrangements for their furry friends' "stay-cations" while they are away. Amidst these preparations, it's crucial to be informed about "kennel cough," a prevalent and contagious respiratory condition that affects dogs.

Dr. David Visser, a leading veterinarian at the Center for Animal Health, shed light on kennel cough during his appearance on WNDU 16 News Now Saturday Morning. Kennel cough, akin to a severe cold in humans, spreads easily in environments where dogs congregate, such as boarding facilities, dog parks, or grooming salons.

Dr. Visser emphasized the importance of understanding the symptoms, which include a persistent, dry cough, nasal discharge, and occasional lethargy. While generally not serious, kennel cough can be distressing for both pets and their owners. Preventive measures, including vaccinations and good hygiene practices, can help mitigate the risk.

For pet owners planning trips, it’s advisable to ensure their pets are up-to-date on vaccinations and discuss any concerns with their veterinarian well in advance. Dr. Visser is available for further questions at the Center for Animal Health. You can reach him at 888-PETS-VETS or via email at michianapetvet@comcast.net.
