PORTAGE, IN — Indiana Dunes National Park is offering a unique opportunity to connect with nature while learning about crucial conservation efforts through its "Fishing in the Dunes" program. Set against the stunning backdrop of Lake Michigan, this event brings together wildlife enthusiasts and local experts to discuss the growing threat of invasive Asian Carp and the ongoing measures to prevent their spread into the Great Lakes.

On Friday, August 30, from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., participants will have the chance to fish alongside park rangers and biologists at the Portage Lakefront and Riverwalk. U.S. Fish and Wildlife Biologist Eric Brossman and Biological Science Technician Jake Kessel will be on hand to share insights into the strategies being employed to protect Lake Michigan from this invasive species.

The program not only offers a hands-on fishing experience but also serves as an educational platform where attendees can engage with experts about the ecological impact of Asian Carp. The presence of this species poses a significant threat to the native fish populations and the overall health of the lake’s ecosystem.

For those interested in joining, 15 sets of fishing gear will be available, although participants are encouraged to bring their own equipment. The gathering point is at 100 Riverwalk Road, Portage, Indiana.

Indiana Dunes National Park, known for its rich biodiversity and scenic beauty, charges an entrance fee of $25 per vehicle. As a reminder, anyone over the age of 18 is required to have a valid Indiana fishing license to participate in the fishing activities.

For more details on this event and other programs at the park, you can reach out to the park office at 219-395-1882 or visit their official website. This event offers a chance to not only enjoy the natural beauty of the Dunes but also to deepen your understanding of the critical conservation efforts underway to preserve our natural resources.
