NOTRE DAME, Ind. — The University of Notre Dame’s storied band, the oldest college band in the United States, kicked off its 179th year with a spirited marchout across campus Thursday morning. The event, a cherished tradition, began outside the Ricci Band Rehearsal Hall and culminated at the Ricci Family Fields, marking the official start of the school year.

This time-honored marchout featured both veteran band members and eager new students vying for a coveted spot in the 2024 Band of the Fighting Irish. Over the next four days, these aspiring musicians will receive intensive instruction in marching and musical fundamentals, culminating in auditions that test their skills and dedication.

The Notre Dame Band has long been synonymous with the university’s athletic events, infusing each game with music and pageantry that resonate with the spirit of the Fighting Irish. As the band embarks on another year, it continues to uphold its legacy, blending tradition with the vibrant energy of a new generation.
