Four-legged royalty: Prom goes to the dogs at the Glass City Dog Park

Two dogs were crowned king and queen of The Glass City Dog Park’s “pooch prom,” giving these four-legged friends something to shake their tails about.

Coda, a 3-year-old “super mutt” was the event’s prom king and Ruthie, a 5-year-old Great Danoodle, was the prom queen, leaving their owners smiling ear-to-ear.

The non-profit organization held its “Enchanted Under the Sea Pooch Prom” at the South Toledo park, 1171 Woodsdale Ave., on May 18, with superlatives, music, treats, and more for guests to enjoy.

“It was for members to have a little fun with their dogs… A lot of our members love a good reason to bring their dogs together,” said Erin Laws, the board president at the Glass City Dog Park. “[They] know that there’s going to be other people there to socialize their dogs and themselves.”

Some members of the park come every day, she said, leading some dog owners to coordinate their prom dates and/or outfits with the other dogs.

This was the first dog prom the group hosted, the board president said, but she hopes it won’t be the last, sharing that “we were already talking about what the theme would be for next year.”

The group often hosts social events, Laws added, like dog dance parties, holiday outings, and more.

It is all in keeping with park’s mission to be a little bit more than might meet the eye.

“The park has become a community unto itself, where members take care of the park, fellow dogs, and community members,” the dog park’s website says. “The friendships that have blossomed as a result of the park have been nothing short of amazing.”

From dogs taking a dip in the kiddie pool to playing fetch with their owners, the canines in attendance were treated like royalty at the pooch prom.

“For me, it’s just fun to see members gather and have a good time,” Laws added. “When they come out … They say they appreciate the event. That’s what I like the most, knowing they had enjoyed the event.”

Membership at the organization costs $45 (for one to two dogs) annually, she said, which covers park maintenance, rental costs, and upkeep.

Its membership for three dogs costs $55 and for four dogs, it's $65 per year.

Pet vet records are checked before dogs can be accepted as a member, Laws continued, making sure they are vaccinated, fixed, and at least six months of age.

Upcoming events to look forward to are the “Pawsion for a Cure” 2K dog walk and adoption event on June 2 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and the Glass City Dog Park’s 10th birthday party on Aug. 17 from 12 to 4 p.m., both hosted at the park.
