(The Center Square) – The results are in. Arizona Secretary of State Adrian Fontes announced the recount results for Congressional District 3 U.S. Representative on Tuesday. The recount reflected different numbers than the first reported number of votes from the primary election, but the results remain the same, with Democratic Candidate Yassamin Ansari moving on to the general election.
According to a press release from the Secretary of State’s office, Ansari received 19,084 votes and her Democratic opponent Raquel Terán received 19,048 votes.
“The Secretary of State is responsible for ensuring that the electronic voting equipment to be used for the recount is available and properly programmed,” reads the press release. “The recount process verified the results, confirming a thirty-nine vote difference.”
In Arizona, an automatic recount is triggered when the margin of victory in an election is less than or equal to 0.5% of the total votes cast. This recount confirms the result with a difference of only three votes from the original reported results.
“The recount, conducted electronically, replicated the initial count results, demonstrating the effectiveness of tabulating methodology used in Maricopa County informed by the 2023 Election Procedures Manual,” reads the press release.
Ansari will be going up against Republican Candidate Jeff Zink in November. Ansari served previously as the vice mayor of Phoenix and as a council woman. According to her campaign website, her priorities include restoring reproductive rights, protecting democracy, taking action against climate change, creating affordable housing and reducing homelessness, strengthening unions, increasing the federal minimum wage, immigration reform and ensuring access to education.
Prior to the recount, both Ansari and Terán posted on X in support of the recount.
“No matter what happens in our race here in #AZ03, my commitment to delivering Arizona for Vice President @KamalaHarris and now Gov,” reads a post on X by Terán. “@Tim_Walz is stronger than ever. This November, we have a choice between a bright future or the dark past. For me, the answer is clear: I’m going to do everything I can to ensure our communities' building progress in Arizona turns out and vote for that bright future in November.”
“While we are confident this lead will hold, it is important to let the vote-counting process fully play out through an automatic recount and we welcome the process ahead,” reads a post on X from Ansari. “We look forward to working with Maricopa County and the Attorney General’s office to ensure a smooth process going forward. Every vote matters and I’d like to thank the hard working election workers committed to counting every vote. They make democracy work.”
