(The Center Square) - Former Seattle City Council candidate Andrew Ashiofu, who is attending his first Democratic National Convention, spoke with The Center Square Associate Editor Greg Bishop on Wednesday afternoon from the DNC in Chicago, Ill.

Ashiofu said being there is being a part of history.

“History is being made electing our first black female president, who is also of Asian descent, it’s eclectic,” said Ashiofu.

“You care about this and read about this, but then you realize you are here because President Joe Biden cares about the American people and he said it’s time to pass the torch,” he said.

Despite the fact former President Donald Trump has made clear he is not associated with Project 2025 , which identifies as a conservative presidential transition project, Ashiofu says tying Trump to the movement is key.

“The message from Project 2025 is un-American and not something we need,” said Ashiofu. “I think the more we talk to people about what is in those pages, the more we can get undecided voters to our side.”

What has he learned from delegates from other states?

“It’s not enough to be from Washington state where we have a blue trifecta,” said Ashiofu. “How can I go to Arizona and knock on doors and how can I write postcards to people in swing districts because we are all in this together. That’s going to make the difference come November.”
