Supreme Court upholds block on slating law

The Illinois Supreme Court issued a decision leaving in place a lower court ruling that blocked a change in the state’s election law that would have kept 14 candidates off the ballot in the 2024 general election.

On May 3, Gov. J.B. Pritzker signed new “anti-slating” legislation into law, changing the rules for ballot access in the middle of an election cycle. The Liberty Justice Center filed a lawsuit against the Illinois State Board of Elections, arguing that the Board’s mid-cycle rule change violated the candidates’ constitutional right to access the ballot.

5 charged in video gaming machine burglaries

Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul charged five men in a series of burglaries at video gaming machines in Central Illinois and the Chicago area.

The attorney general said the group of men are linked to a string of 22 burglaries of video gaming machines from last year across 12 counties, including DeWitt, DuPage, McLean, and Peoria counties.

Along with local law enforcement, the attorney general’s office worked with the Illinois Gaming Board in prosecuting the men.

    Sox sued over stadium shooting

It has been one year since a Chicago White Sox fan was shot during a game at Guaranteed Rate Field, and now the victim is taking legal action.

Police said the 42-year-old woman was shot in the leg while sitting in the right field bleachers. The woman is now suing the White Sox, the concessions operator and the owner of the ballpark.

Her attorney said his client suffered serious injuries as a result of a failure to take proper security measures.
