Post-COVID student scores on rise, but still catching up
It appears students may be recovering from low scores in reading and math that were the result of COVID. Though not out of the woods yet, nationwide learning scores in reading and math are on the upswing, according to the Education Recovery School Scorecard, a study conducted by Harvard and Stanford universities and Dartmouth College. The study covered what it described as the first full year of post-COVID student recovery, between spring 2022 and spring 2023.

Interviews held to fill board of ed seat
Four candidates have been interviewed to fill the vacant seat of retired Cherry Hll board of education member Jenn Fleisher. Lee Plenn, Diana Frank, Nacovin Norman and Quadsia Niaz offered brief background information before answering questions at the board’s Jan. 23 meeting. They were asked to comment on a recent board decision and how they would have decided it differently, and all of them agreed the district’s expanded pre-K rollout could have gone more smoothly with better community engagement.

According to the oft-cited psychiatrist Elisabeth Kubler-Ross, there are five stages of grief: denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance. You could say another stage is the result of state legislation. A bill signed early last month by Gov. Phil Murphy requires health and gym teachers in state public schools to instruct students in grades eight to 12 on the physical, emotional and behavioral symptoms of grief and offer coping mechanisms, according to nj.gov.

Cherry Hill purchases Holly Ravine Farms
Cherry Hill has closed on its $3.8 million purchase of the historic Holly Ravine Farm to preserve it as open space. “Our family is thrilled that the legacy of Holly Ravine Farm will be preserved forever,” Robert Gilmour said of the farm his family has owned since the 1930s. “We are confident that the township will be a good steward of the land and are happy to be part of creating a greener Cherry Hill.”
Show choir, climb higher
The Cherry Hill Recreation Department‘s show choir program – led by township teachers – will take place from Monday, Feb. 5, to Thursday, March 21, at Cherry Hill East. The program is for kids grades 5 to 8 who will gather on Mondays and Thursdays from 6 to 8 p.m. The program is directed by Laurie Lausi, of East choirs, and Maya Kociba, of Bret Harte choirs. Regular rehearsals and interactive sessions will help kids gain self-esteem in and out of the sessions.
