Jackson State football quarterback Jacobian Morgan dropped back to pass near Louisiana Monroe's 45 in Thursday's season opener.

While given time by his offensive line, Morgan heaved a long ball to Joanes Fortilien, connecting for a 41-yard touchdown. After halftime he used his legs to tie the game.

ULM scored the rest of the points in the Tigers ' 30-14 loss. Morgan finished 23-of-28 for 228 passing yards and a touchdown, and added a rushing touchdown against JSU's only FBS opponent this season.

"It's up to him to get these guys around him to believe, and these receivers want to play hard for him," Jackson State coach T.C. Taylor said. "He's just got to continue to play consistent football. That's what's going to be critical for him."

Morgan finished JSU's 2023 season playing the final six games after missing most of the year due to an injury. He completed 83 of 123 passes for 842 yards with 10 touchdowns and one interception. He also rushed for 150 yards with six touchdowns.

JSU's quarterback battle in 2024 was between juniors Morgan and ZyMcDonald and sophomore Cam'ron McCoy.

While the Tigers' offense began to stall after Morgan's rushing touchdown, Taylor said he expects Morgan to improve as the season continues.

"He's gonna get better as the season goes," Taylor said, "but, you know, he played a solid football game."

JSU did not make players available after the game, citing the late start and need to return home.

Morgan's only true hiccup came with his first interception. After a throw to Fabian McCray, the ball slipped out of McCray's hands during the rainy night, and ULM defender Wydett Williams Jr. caught it before it landed on the ground.

"That one interception, like I said, that's off Fabian McCray's hands. He makes a great throw on that to extend that drive," Taylor said. "But, like I said, he played a solid game, but it's up to him to continue to come out and play solid football."
