Swinney Gives Latest on Jeff Scott

CLEMSON- Since Jeff Scott moved back to the Clemson area last year, fans have clamored for his return to the Tigers’ coaching staff.

While Scott is indeed back in the area and has been seen inside the facility at times over the past year or so, the former USF head coach is heavily involved in the real estate business these days, and contrary to what some might believe, he is not currently on Swinney’s staff in any capacity.

After Tuesday’s practice, Dabo Swinney was asked what is like to have Scott so close by but not in the football facility every day, and the head coach had a little fun with his response.

“He’s two doors down from me,” Swinney said, referring to how close the two live to one another. “He loves what he is doing and having a ball. Anybody looking to build a house on Lake Keowee, call Jeff Scott. He is your man.”

While Scott has attended at least one practice recently, that is as far as it goes these days when it comes to college football.

“He’s doing great, he is having a ball,” Swinney added. “He’s got a lot going on. He is coaching his kids. He was at practice the other day.”

Scott was an integral part of Swinney’s staff from 2008-19. He served as the wide receivers coach during his entire tenure and was the co-offensive coordinator from 2015 until the time he left. Each of those Clemson teams advanced to the College Football Playoff, with two of them winning a national title.

After the 2019 season, Scott left for the head coaching job at USF where he was just 4-26 across three seasons.

During a recent appearance on WCCP, Scott mentioned a text message he received from Swinney the morning after the “Tyler From Spartanburg” rant last season. Scott said Swinney’s text asked, “How’s the home building business?'”

When asked about the text, Swinney would not confirm or deny, and again had some fun with his response.

“I don’t know if I can confirm or deny that,” Swinney quipped. “I’m not sure what kind of state of mind I was in. Not sure if he’s lying or telling the truth. He will make up some lies on you. He is a funny guy. Those Scott’s they got some jokes. So I don’t know.”
