Klubnik Poised for Breakout in 2024? ESPN Analyst Weighs In

Is Cade Klubnik poised for a breakout season in 2024, his second full season as Clemson’s starting quarterback?

ESPN college football analyst Greg McElroy weighed in on that during an episode of his Always College Football show, pointing out that it wouldn’t be the first time a quarterback has made a major leap and just needed time to fulfill their potential.

“It’s pretty encouraging with some of the buzz that we’re getting out of camp on Cade Klubnik,” McElroy said. “And who’s to say that Cade Klubnik won’t be the next in line of great quarterbacks, that just took a little while for them to reach their potential. Guys like Joe Burrow, who really didn’t reach his potential until his fifth year. Guys like Hendon Hooker, who at Tennessee, in his last year, had an all-SEC, All-American type of season. Bo Nix reinvented himself when he got out to Oregon. There’s a handful of guys whose progress really grew from where they started to where they finished. Jayden Daniels was cast away, ends up at LSU, wins a Heisman Trophy. So, there’s a bunch of examples of that.”

Klubnik flashed his potential during an up-and-down season as a first-year starter in 2023, when the former five-star prospect and former Texas Gatorade Player of the Year had a 64 percent completion percentage, 2,844 passing yards and 19 passing touchdowns with nine interceptions, to go with 182 rushing yards and four rushing scores.

“Maybe Klubnik’s next in line for a guy that blossoms in year two as a full-time starter and gets better from that point forward,” McElroy said.
