There’s no denying Clemson needs better quarterback play than it got a season ago if the Tigers are going to have the kind of season they want to have.

Cade Klubnik was up-and-down in his first year as the full-time starter and as he heads into his junior campaign, as well as his second season in Garrett Riley’s offense, backup Chris Vizzina has seen a more determined quarterback.

“He’s hungry, just like all of us,” Vizzina said of Klubnik. “I feel like as a quarterback group, we’ve all been leading very well. Just with the whole team.”

Vizzina is just one of the latest Tigers to praise the growth Klubnik has taken as a leader, something the backup quarterback said has permeated down to the rest of the team.

“Everyone just has this really good energy and we’ve just got this really good chemistry,” he said. “What I am excited about this team is how close we are and I think that will take us really far this season.”

After redshirting during his first season at Clemson, Vizzina now appears to be QB2 heading into the season. Working with Klubnik so closely during the spring, summer and into fall camp has only allowed their relationship to blossom, something Vizzina believes will only help both quarterbacks be more successful on the field.

“This team is just really close,” he said. “This quarterback group is really close. Me and Cade are really close and I think that will pay big dividends throughout the season.”

With fall camp now in the books and the Tigers fully focused on the challenging season-opening matchup against top-ranked Georgia in Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta on August 31, Vizzina maintains the mindset is as it would be for any other game. That is to prepare for a faceless opponent and not beat themselves.

“Just working really hard,” said Vizzina. “Of course we have flipped the page, now we have an opponent but at the end of the day, now we are playing Clemson. We don’t want to beat ourselves. This going to be a good matchup and we are excited about it but at the end of the day we are playing Clemson.”
