Update: Aug. 14: The Larimer County Coroner's Office has identified the decedent as 24-year-old Rupert Jorgenson of Loveland. The cause was accidental drowning.

    Original story

A paddleboarder died Saturday after being pulled from Carter Lake an hour and a half after he was seen falling in the water, according to the Larimer County Sheriff's Office.

A caller to 911 around 2:15 p.m. reported that the man, whose identity has not been released, fell into the water and did not come back up. They said he wasn't wearing a life jacket and wasn't tethered to the paddleboard, according to a news release from the sheriff's office.

Witnesses weren't able to locate him, the news release said.

Multiple agencies responded, alongside the Larimer County Sheriff's Office: Berthoud Fire Department, Loveland Fire Rescue Authority, Thompson Valley EMS and Larimer County Rangers. Dive teams located him in the water around 3:50 p.m. and began first aid efforts.

The man was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact Larimer County Sheriff's Office investigator Matthew Koyn at 970-498-7408.

“This incident impacts so many people, from the victim’s family and friends to witnesses and first responders,” Capt. Bobby Moll stated in the news release. “Weather conditions can go from calm to chaos quickly this time of year. Having safety gear on your boat or board is crucial to preventing tragedy. Our hearts are with everyone grieving this heartbreaking loss.”

The sheriff's office said it responded to multiple water emergency calls involving paddleboarders on Saturday.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife unofficially logs water-related deaths, and Kara Van Hoose, Northeast Region public information officer, said there have been 30 so far this year.
