BYESVILE − Luke Fabian, Deerassic Park education director, introduced Byesville Rotary Club members to many of the activities planned at the park aimed at reconnecting young people and families to the outdoors.

Fabian provides between 60 and 70 in-class visits to more than 30 school districts along with visiting Girl Scout and Boy Scout troops and 4-H groups in the winter. These visits usually focus on one activity and range from 45 minutes to an hour and a half.

Field trips include a tour of the new, hands-on Welcome Center that offers a variety of nature displays. Most field trips run about three to six hours and consist of four to six programs with a break for lunch depending on the schedule. The peak seasons for field trips are April through May and September through October. Deerassic offers transportation grants to schools and youth groups to help cover the cost of busing.

In the summer, Deerassic offers day-long summer camps. Each camp focuses on a special subject such as archery or Big Foot. The camps typically run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The camps are popular and tend to fill quickly. Fabian warned that registration for the camps begins on May 1 and he expects some will be filled within 45 minutes.
