Weather conditions ideal for wildfire, heat stress

BROOKHAVEN — The National Weather Service warns weather conditions are ideal for wildfire risk and heat stress this week. Temperatures could reach the mid 90s with heat indices around 105.

East Lincoln, Ruth and Heucks Retreat Volunteer Fire Departments responded to wildfire calls Sunday afternoon as gusty winds, low humidity and dry vegetation brewed a perfect storm. The NWS in Jackson advises people to burn with caution. It is always wise to check weather conditions before and during your burn especially wind direction, wind speed and humidity forecasts.

If you do burn, keep a close watch on your fire, have a fire break of bare mineral dirt around your burn and keep water on hand to keep it under control if needed. Late growing season burns can be an effective wildlife management tool when used appropriately.

NWS Jackson reminds people to dispose of cigarettes properly and not on the ground. Be sure to secure trailer chains before driving down roadways. One spark is all it takes for a wildfire to start. The Mississippi Forestry Commission states that 9 out of 10 wildfires are caused by human error.

At this time, four counties in Mississippi are under a burn ban according to the MFC. Franklin and Adams Counties are the closest counties under a burn ban.

Conditions are also ripe for heat stress. Temperatures could hit highs in the mid 90s, heat indices could reach 105 or higher this week. Remember to stay hydrated, avoid strenuous outdoor activities and take frequent breaks if working outside.
