FRANKLINTON, La. — A routine DUI checkpoint operation by the Washington Parish Sheriff’s Office on the evening of February 6 led to a significant drug arrest at the intersection of Highway 437 and Highway 16 in Franklinton.

Deputies conducting the operation arrested Byron Morgan, a 31-year-old Franklinton resident, after discovering illegal drugs during a vehicle search prompted by a non-operational headlight violation.

According to Lieutenant David Cupp, at approximately 7:43 PM, deputies observed a white 2004 Chevy Tahoe with a defective headlight. Deputy Dillon Kent approached the vehicle and discovered that Morgan was driving without a valid license.

Upon further inspection, Deputies Kent and Matthew Manning conducted a search of Morgan’s vehicle with his consent. During the search, a baggie containing a brown powdery substance suspected to be illegal drugs was found inside a book bag on the passenger seat. Morgan later confessed to the substance being ecstasy.

Morgan was subsequently arrested and charged with possession of Schedule II, driving under suspension, improper equipment, and possession of drug paraphernalia. Additional evidence, including cash and a red straw with powder residue, was discovered on Morgan during processing at the Washington Parish Jail.

Sheriff Randy “Country” Seal emphasized the office’s commitment to enforcing the law and ensuring public safety. “This operation highlights the office’s dedication to removing impaired and unsafe drivers from our roads, as well as combating drug-related offenses within our community,” stated Sheriff Seal.

For further inquiries, the Washington Parish Sheriff’s Office Public Information Officer, Candice Carona Sledge, can be reached at 985-839-3434.
