More than 400 flights delayed at Denver International Airport due to severe storms

Severe storms threaten to bring heavy rain and hail to the Denver metro area, prompting the delay and cancelation of hundreds of flights at Denver International Airport.

As of 3:45 p.m., 447 flights were delayed while 17 flights were canceled out of DIA, according to FlightAware.

Departures were delayed an average of 63 minutes due to thunderstorms, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.

More monsoonal moisture in the air Monday will increase chances for damaging wind and large hail east of downtown Denver, according to Denver Gazette news partner 9News weather team.

9News Meteorologist Keely Chalmers said clouds will increase as we head through the day, with the potential for impactful storms this afternoon and evening.

Throughout Monday afternoon, storms rolled through the foothills before moving into the Interstate 25 corridor. Heavy rain, gusty winds, and damaging hail are possible.

Heavy rain could become hazardous across much of Colorado on Aug. 19 and 20. Mapping shows that this risk encompasses nearly the entire western half of the state, along with the general Denver and Colorado Springs areas, according to the National Weather Service Weather Prediction Center.

The National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm watch until 9 p.m. for the following counties:

• Morgan
• Elbert
• Kit Carson
• Lincoln
• Cheyenne
• Washington
• Yuma
• Pueblo
• Crowley
• Otero
• El Paso

Chalmers said there's a 50% chance of storms for the Denver metro area on Monday. The storms may intensify as they move over the eastern plains.
