ENGLEWOOD — Dirt is on the move for a new Broncos training facility.

The team broke ground Thursday morning with ceremonial shoveling from Broncos co-owners Greg Penner and Carrie Walton Penner, team president Damani Leech, and additional project leaders at Broncos Park. The team will continue training adjacent to new construction — west of the current facility on the plaza level — until its estimated completion in June 2026.

The Broncos have trained in their current facility since 1990 with three Super Bowl championships.

“Today we break ground on a new headquarters here at Broncos Park powered by Common Spirit,” Penner said at a Thursday news conference. “I believe this new facility, like the one we opened 34 years ago, will mark the beginning of the next great chapter in Broncos history.”

The $175-million project is a three-story, 205,000-square-foot, modernized training facility and team headquarters. Football and business operations will occupy the top two floors. The first floor is optimized for players to improve their overall experience, and specifically, reduce their foot travel.

“Players are walking across the parking lot to get to the weight room. Late in the season, that’s a cold and icy walk,” Leech said. “They’re walking across the field to get into the indoor practice facility. So, just managing the number of steps per day. We actually track that.”

The team sought inspiration by touring modernized NFL training headquarters; including the Dolphins, Vikings and Raiders. The Broncos' facility in Englewood will have a larger locker room, below-ground parking and upgraded sports performance areas. Locally sourced materials are planned in construction with energy-efficient design.

Their new facility, unlike some NFL teams, does not include an entertainment district for fans.

“This is our space,” Penner said. “Sometimes, we’ll have fans and partners here, but it’s really about work and practice. And I think sometimes if you combine that with more entertainment, there can be some negatives with that.”

The Broncos plan to host fans again for training camp in 2025 with revised seating options still being determined. The new training facility is the latest major financial commitment from the Walton-Penner ownership group since purchasing the team for $4.65 billion in 2022. The Broncos spent $100 million for stadium upgrades at Empower Field last year.

“I do think it sends a message to the team that we’re willing to invest and we’re going to set a very high standard,” Penner said. “Our expectations for ourselves and for them is very high.”
