Ever since 2021, the Iowa State football program has handed out the Jack Trice Endowed Scholarship, given annually to a Black student-athlete on the team entering their senior year.

The recipient, picked by Cyclones football coach Matt Campbell, is an athlete who portrays traits of Trice including courage, character, selflessness, leadership, dedication to the community and academic/athletic achievement.

Cyclones wide receiver Jaylin Noel has all those qualities. Noel, a senior wide receiver for the Cyclones, was named this year’s recipient.

He’s the third recipient, joining Anthony Johnson Jr., who earned it twice in 2021 and 2022, and Gerry Vaughn (2023).

“It’s an honor to receive this year’s Jack Trice Endowed Scholarship,” Noel said in a press release announcing the news. “This honor does not only represent the work I have put in to become the leader I am today, but it shows the support and continuous care the university and the football program have given me to allow me to become the man I am today. To be able to represent a person like Jack Trice, who opened pathways for young men like myself, is truly a blessing. This scholarship represents courage, leadership, character and selflessness. All being traits I will continue to uphold my whole life just as Mr. Trice did!”

Noel has been a star for the Cyclones on and off the field. The Kansas City, Mo., native hauled in 66 receptions for 820 yards and seven touchdowns as a junior in 2023. He’s the third-fastest player in school history to reach 100 receptions and enters his final season with 165 catches for 10 receiving touchdowns.

Noel also earned Academic All-Big 12 honors in 2022 and is a three-time member of the Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll.

Trice was Iowa State’s first African-American athlete. He died from injuries sustained during a game against Minnesota. Iowa State’s football stadium is named in his honor.
