Bass Pro Drive closure begins in Altoona for construction; will last at least one month

A road closure and detour around the Outlets of Des Moines in Altoona's Prairie Crossing complex began this week after a delay earlier this year.

The city announced in a news release that a section of Bass Pro Drive Northwest, from south of the access to Fairfield Inn & Suites to the west roundabout, closed started Aug. 26. The closure impacts direct access to the outlet mall and other businesses in the area along Bass Pro Drive.

City spokesperson Rachel Simon said the area is changing to a regional storm detention pond system, and the infrastructure for the system needs to run under the road, causing the partial closure. The concrete also will be replaced.

The switch will eliminate the need for smaller basins in the development, according to city documents.

The road closure was expected to begin in May , but it was delayed as crews continued to relocate infrastructure.

The Bass Pro Drive detour will follow Prairie Fire Northwest, Tallgrass Parkway Northwest and Adventureland Drive around the Prairie Crossing loop.

The closure is expected to last at least one month. Updates will be available on the city website .
