"Moulin Rouge" has a tour stop at the Des Moines Civic Center this summer and ensemble member Stefanie Renee Salyers taught Mayor Connie Boesen the famous dance.

Mayor Connie Boesen calls Broadway Series a cultural, economic driver in Des Moines

It didn't take longer than a few minutes and a couple of takes before Salyers was calling Boesen a professional cancan dancer.

"We are so fortunate to have the Broadway Willis Series because it brings Broadway to Des Moines," Boesen said.

The series generates about $37 million in economic activity in the city, but also brings unique shows and experiences that improve the culture of the city, Boesen said.

'Moulin Rouge' will be at the Des Moines Civic Center until Sept. 1, 2024. Shows are available daily Tuesdays through Sundays.
