City officials in Rancho Mirage are anticipating heavy traffic delays for the next month on Gerald Ford Drive as a new sewer line is installed between Bob Hope Drive and Monterey Avenue, just north of the new Disney-branded Cotino development that's under construction.

Work was expected to begin Tuesday, May 21, with the project slated to take roughly 30 days to complete. Multiple lanes of Gerald Ford Drive will be closed at various points, with traffic in both directions impacted at times.

“Motorists are strongly advised to use alternative routes, if possible,” the city of Rancho Mirage said in its announcement. “Please remember to use caution when driving through work zones.”

The road closure was announced as work continues on Cotino, which will feature hundreds of homes, a swimmable lagoon and a town center with shops and restaurants. Project officials expect construction of the first homes to be completed by early 2025, with some homebuyers moving in shortly thereafter.
