El Paso is home to some of the most iconic spots to catch a high school football game on Friday nights — places where Borderland football legends have created unforgettable memories.

El Paso Times sports reporters Bret Bloomquist and Felix Chavez share their picks for the best high school football stadium in El Paso.

Felix Chavez's favorite football stadium: Eastwood High School

El Paso has plenty of great high school football stadiums for various reasons, and, of course, El Paso High's Jones Stadium is among the best in the nation with its scenic views of Downtown El Paso and its long history.

But my favorite stadium for a game is Eastwood High. Game nights are electric at the Class 6A school, especially since coach Julio Lopez took over in 2015.

The home crowd at Trooper Stadium shows up earnestly and cheers loudly and proudly for the team. The program's success helps, especially in the 2021 season, when it went three rounds deep in the playoffs.

A winning tradition has been created at Eastwood, and the community has taken notice by consistently showing up — giving the Troopers an excellent home field advantage. In the competitive District 1-6A, many big games have taken place at Eastwood, which adds to the intrigue and atmosphere.

The stadium seats over 5,000 and overlooks the surrounding neighborhoods.

Bret Bloomquist's favorite football stadium: El Paso High School

El Paso High's majestic stadium isn't just the best in the city; it's one of the best in America.

"The Old Lady on the Hill" overlooking the field is dramatic. Looking south, Downtown El Paso is laid out in front. The stadium itself is unique, with the fishhook layout of the stands wrapping around the end zone. There can't be a more beautiful way to take in a high school football game.

    R. R. Jones Stadium was built in 1916 and was the site of the very first Sun Bowl and is home to the El Paso High School team. It always offers fantastic views of Downtown El Paso from the stadium seats.

General John J. "Black Jack" Pershing once rode his horse down the field in Jones Stadium to help celebrate The United States entry into World War I. Jones was the first major concrete stadium built in the country, opening in 1916.

The stadium is considered the birthplace of Texas Friday Night Lights as R.R. Jones hosted the first ever Friday Night Football games in Texas in 1928. This stadium was also the home to the first three Sun Bowls from 1935 to 1937.
