Update: 2 victims killed in dune buggy crash with truck identified as Fresno men in 20s

The driver and passenger in what officers described as a dune buggy were killed in Fresno on Wednesday when they were struck by a big rig, the California Highway Patrol said.

The two men in the off-road vehicle were headed south on Westlawn Avenue about 1 a.m. as they approached the intersection at Belmont Avenue, the CHP said in a news release.

The dune buggy was not outfitted with lights and other equipment that would make it legal to drive on streets, CHP said, and the driver failed to stop at the intersection’s stop sign before the fatal crash.

A big rig driven by a 52-year-old headed east on Westlawn Avenue was unable to stop and collided with the off road vehicle, killing both people inside, CHP said.

The men killed in the incident were identified Wednesday afternoon by the Fresno County Coroner’s Office as Miguel Ramirez Jr., 22, of Fresno and Christopher Fernandez, 27, of Fresno. Ramirez was the driver.

The big rig driver remained at the scene and spoke with officers, CHP said. Officers did not suspect the big rig driver of being impaired.
