A new dynamic for Monty Tech football could help team reach next level

Monty Tech football is working with a new dynamic this season that is not typical for the program.

While at other public schools, athletes grew up playing together for years, players at technical and vocational schools are normally meeting each other for the first time as freshmen.

Luckily for the Bulldogs, members of this year's football roster had the opportunity to grow up playing alongside one another in Wachusett Pop Warner. They have the bond that is needed to play with chemistry on the field.

Back this season are a handful of starters from last year, giving them a bit of an edge in experience. Senior quarterback Dylan Hunton is back to reprise his role and is excited to lead his teammates.

Other key returners include Aiden LeBlanc, Michael Duddy, Arthur Walch, Aiden Butler, Charlie Doyle and Caleb Hall.

"There's a group of about seven or eight of them that grew up playing together," head coach Anthony Secino said. "The core group of our guys this year have been playing Pop Warner together forever so that's kind of a new dynamic, we don't get that a ton."

The bond and experience along with the hard work of newcomers fighting for a big spot is what Secino hopes will push his team this season. Last year, Monty Tech finished with a record of 5-6, something that he believes needs huge improvement.

"We seem to be trending up right now so hopefully we can get them ready and show up to play when it counts," Secino said. "The big message I'm giving the guys is we gotta show up every day and work hard, we can't take anything for granted. That's kind of important to us."

With a lot of big teams on the schedule and goals of making both the MIAA state tournament and statewide vocational school tournament, the Bulldogs have a lot of work to do.

"The goal is to go or the voke bowl or even MIAA," Hunton said. "I think every day we are improving really well and we're just excited for week one against 'Gansett and hoping to beat them. That's the expectation."
